This game is similar to the board game 'Risk', if you've ever played it; however, whereas you start with troops across the world in Risk, you start out from one location in War.
War is a game in which the goal is the complete and utter extermination of your enemy; bonus points go to you if you managed to conquer the world as well. You start out in one of the Big Five Hidden Villages (Iwa, Kumo, Konoha, Suna, Kiri) where you have a Shadow Portal, which is a portal to a Shadow Realm where all of your troops are located. This would have originally been designed to take place in the Shadow Realm, but making a map for that place would've been far too much of a chore.
After starting out in one of the villages, you can set out to gain the advantage by taking over other area in order to surround the enemy, or to gain more Shadow Portals, should you be capable of capturing another Hidden Village (All Shadow Portals have a limited amount of creatures they can summon, so you need as many as you can; Also, Iwa, Kumo, Konoha, Suna, and Kiri all can summon more creatures than that of the Takigakure, or other minor villages.)
Also, you can gain troops from Hidden Villages you occupy; you have the incredibly powerful Kage, but if they die, then the Shadow Portal in your main village is destroyed, but not any others (Ex: If the Kazekage dies, then the portal in Sunagakure disappears, while a portal in Yukigakure is not effected.)
Another important troop is the Jinchuuriki; the identities and locations are in the spoilers below.
Jinchuuriki Locations:
The important thing about Jinchuuriki is that they are one of the strongest troops in the game, and are capable of being captured; you simply need to capture their home village (Ex: Capture Kumogakure, and you get Yugito Nii and Killer B).
The Jinchuuriki also will prove to be very helpful in other ways, in that a Jinchuuriki is capable of using a Summoning Scroll, which means that they can summon individuals into your army, strengthening it.

The Summoning Scrolls and who use them are as follow:
